please help fixing a broken tip
Hi folks
This is my first post, glad to be here. I've broken the tip of the blade of my beloved Cai Dao as you can see on the pictures https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9...9xVkcwVjJCLWtv https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B9...YwUVRUTEFyRmZZ On the blade it's written 8Cr13MoV, I guess it's the steel alloy. Is there any way I can cut out straight the broken part without ruining the temper? Is that possible to cut this blade using only hand tools? thanks in advance |

You should be able to work on that blade with hand tools, you'd need a good file and a sturdy vise. I think I'd just file out that broken curve and turn it into a straight line. After that, you could sharpen that short straight piece and call it customized by turning that defect into a fancy feature ...

Oh to add to what Ray said, you can also use wet dry sandpaper cut and stretched tight taped to a stick or wrapped around the file if the metal is too hard on your file, use 50-60 grit to start and finish with 220 or so. If you have a grinder (bench, belt or angle) you can use that, but just make sure not to get the steel hot, keep a wet rag handy or bowl of water and cool it off after every pass and go lightly near the edge and I do mean lightly.

Dremel with a cut-off disc with light feathering cuts if the above suggestions are too difficult/hard. Just don't try to pressure hog the cut. Jim's right on keeping her cool, you can actually cut it with the Dremel lying flat on a wet rag. Like Ray's idea of sharpening the leading angle when you are through truing it up.....call it a "Tactical Cai".
