First Fixed. Wharncliff with sculped bolsters and dyed burl. (Dailup Beware)

Hello,
After weeks of making kits and reading the boards about the proces of making a fixed blade, and a lot of grinding practice, I have completed my first fixed blade. The entire process was great. I planned well enough that everything went together smooth as glass.

This was my first grind over 2", first fixed blade, first extensive hand shaping for the bolsters, first peening job, HT, you name it....pretty excited about how it turned out. Feels like it was made to be held...fits a hand like a glove. 1/4" nickel silver that i left flared as a thumbrest along the spine....feels like quite a slicer!

So here it is:
O-1 toolsteel
Approx 5 3/4" OAL
Flat ground, then draw filed
Filework on spine
Triple dyed buckeye burl
Mosaic pins
1/4" nickel silver bolsters
Copper inlay

If only I could make sheaths...

All I can say is NICE JOB!!!! I love the design and especially that handle!!! You obviously put a lot of tough into this one and it paid off. Also, (I missed it on my first look) the copper inlay looks awesome!!! That sure has a lot of nice touches!!

Another nail in the coffin of the great kit debate!!!!!

TicTok,

I'm impressed with your imagination almost as much as your willingness to avoid the standard, simple fixed blade design that we see most first-timer's try on their initial sole-authorship attempts. Well done!

I see a lot of room for improvement on the finish, but you're already miles ahead of a lot of experienced makers in "style". As a collector, I'm watching guys like you!!!

Alex

Wow thanks!

As far as finish goes, I somewhat jumped the gun posting pictures because it was looking so good. The bolsters and blade are now pretty much dead mirror, though im considering switching to a 800 grit hand rub for the blade. Once i get it "finished" ill get some better shots....I'll have the handle like glass and the bolsters reflecting my camera by the time I am done.

Thanks for the support! Youll be seeing more from me for sure....
