D-2 Almost stainless?
I have been looking at some steel charts and one or two has mentioned that D-2 can have as much as 13% chromium, anybody know of a supplier that stocks a D-2 with that much chromium? Even if I get a D-2 with 11% chromium, how well does that fair agianst something like ATS-34 and BG-42 for corrosion resistance? Any body ever compared D-2 against ATS-34 or BG-42 for cutting and edge holding?? Can D-2 get the all important "scray sharp" edge?

Stainless is an illusion. All steel rusts, some more than others. D2 with 13% chrome will rust just slightly less than that with 11%. ATS-34, 154CM, and BG42 will rust less than any D2 since they contain just enough chrome (14%) to be considered stainless and no more. There's a threshold where the free chrome is protective; less than that rusts. S30V also has 14% chrome but because of powder metallurgy, it has more free chrome and acts like 440C (17-18% chrome) for corrosion resistance.
D2 edges were discussed in another thread. |
