Easy Hawk Handle Drilling Guide

Tried out this drilling guide on a 5/8" X 18" dowel yesterday, it worked better than expected.

Drill a 1/4 inch hole with brad point drill, the piece of pine was held in a drill press vise.

The wood could be clamped to angle iron if you don't have a drill vise.

Here is the setup. The drill bit is a 1/4" X 12" bought years ago from Boeing Salvage, think I paid a couple bucks for it.

A small countersink with a 1/4" shank is used in this end, it spindles the dowel when drilling.

The drilled dowel.

The dowel was center drilled about 3/8" deep on both ends with a 1/4" brad point drill bit before drilling through the dowel. The dowel was reversed in the guide frequently and turned by hand about a half turn each time the drill was backed out to remove chips.

That is a much more simple and easy to make drilling fixture then the one I posted over on the "Tool time" thread. Good idea and thanks for posting it!

Thanks, the holes were out of alignment a bit in the middle so used this homemade drill welded to cold rolled steel to ream out the hole.

I think it's about time for me to beat myself over the head with my many ruined handles!

Thanks, Gene. I'll try that on the next handle I do.

It is a version of a antler drill fixture made for one of my booklets in 1997, I were younger then.

It could be remade with a longer bar for hawk handles.
