Question Blade finish ?

I got a request for a ?black" blade and bolsters on a folder kit. I was looking at Brownells and one from T R products. I know they will not last forever but does any one have any input?

I know alot of folks who have used Duracote(spelling?) to some success on knives, including folders. It's commonly used as a gun finish that I believe is baked on. Hope this helps.

I've seen some sharp looking knives with black micarta or black G10 for the bolsters. Brownell's has a good technical staff. If you call them up and tell them what you want to do, they could suggest some options, though their expertise is generally in firearms.

I have used the Brownell product. It is sprayed on like paint and then baked at 350 degree for 30 minutes. It makes a very durable finish but like any surface coating it can be damaged.

There are many ways to surface coat steel such as these baked on finishes, powder coating, various nitride coatings. They all work pretty well but they all will wear off too. The botton line for me is that steel is not black and if you coat a blade the user needs to expect it to look pretty crappy after a while if he uses it for much of anything. Black knives only look good as long as you leave them sitting in a case on your shelf...

Jimbo,

Are you using stainless or a carbon steel? If using carbon, you might want to look into some of the old rust bluing recipes used for guns made before WWII. The more applications you give, generally the blacker they will get. It will still scratch/wear with use, but it might give you another option. The coatings will generally give you something of a matte finish. With the bluing you can keep the polish on the blade, and just add the color.
