Belt Grinder Question
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-x-5-Disc-B...ht_3835wt_1139
So I see this on Ebay and I can get one very similar for around $50 bucks. I live in an apartment in Chicago so anything huge or industrial is out of the question at this time. Right now I have been working with files and a hacksaw without a vice. I will show pics when I finish my first knife. For a minimal investment of $50 do you all think this could be a good starting point for me? Thanks for any input! |

I understand the problem with the apartment but I'd save the money and buy something better when you can. When I started making knives I lived in a 30 foot motor home so I'm guessing my 'shop' area was even smaller than yours. So, I bought a 1x30 just like that one. The belts are tiny and wear out very fast. The motor has no power so you can't remove metal quickly, files are faster. If you're making pen knife sized blades - you know, 2" pocket knife blades - it would be OK I suppose but any more than that and I'd stick with the files.
I know you have a lease and apartment rules and a deposit to consider and I didn't have those issues to deal with in my motorhome. But, before I was done I did have a 2x72" grinder, a small drill press, a lathe, a micro mill, and a bandsaw all within an 8'x8' space and made knives that way for several years. So, you'll find a way if you really want to but that little thing would probably be a waste of money . Hand tools will do anything you need to do to make a knife. Power tools just speed things up, that's all ... |

Listen to Ray! The only thing that machine will bring you is regret.

Thanks for the input guys! I am going to hold off on that grinder and just use the money to diy a little forge.

Hope you plan on doing that on a balcony and not inside the rooms. not only is that a fire hazard but the heat would be brutal.
Any type of grinder/sander will produce an obscene amount of dust. It can be very brutal to clean up as it forms a powder and likes to stick to everything. I suggest a very good shop vac and a setup that allows you to clean up VERY good, dont want residue laying around. __________________ Gold is for the mistress - silver for the maid Copper for the craftsman cunning in his trade. I will be making a mobile unit attached to an old dolly that I can take outside to forge and put away when not in use. I am just using files right now so dust control is easy but I will be making a nice shop vac setup for the future.
