Cone Mandrel

Does anyone know what a cone mandrel is and what one looks like. Anyone have a picture. I gather they are big like 2-4 feet high and made of cast iron/steel. Used for making wheels I think or rings anyway. THanks for any info

The tall cone thing is a mandrel. You can see the scale by the coffee mug.

I had to edit my post you asked for a use also. A mandrel is used for any thing that needs a curve or a socket like a shovel. Your traditional anvil has a mandrel at one or both ends the uses are limitless. if you go to the anvil fire website they have instructions on how to build one out of scrap steel if you have an arc welder. If you were planning on purchasing one it is a costly item.

Ok this is why i ask, this is a picture of what is sitting by a tree in my neighbors backyard. No one knows what it is and I thought it might be a cone mandrel what do you think?

Still learning this pic posting thing, its about 3 feet high.
There is also a slot that you can kinda see on it in the pic, it runs the whole way from the top to the bottom.

Yes that is a mandrel, and if you could acquire that tool for a small amount of money it would be a great investment.

If it isn’t a mandrel its one big fire hose nozzle.

Yup, it's a cone mandrel, and it has a tong slot! That's what the slot is for, so you can make rings and still hold on to 'em. Those are useful to a small segment of the smithing community, but highly valued by those who want one.

Ok so if I am hearing everyone correctly I should try to get my hands on this if I can, any idea what something like that is worth. I know my neighbor doesnt want it. but I want to be fair to her on some level too, just would like to know what they go for.

Ragnik, do a little research on the web and see what a new one costs. Granted the new price of what is still available in the line of serious forge tools is rediculously inflated, but still, the old stuff is worth a surprising price to those who really need it and appreciate its use.

Thanks richard I checked out a few sites and yes they are way up there in price for the new ones up to as much as $900 Regardless I think I will see if se wants to get rid of it and hang onto it for now, play with it some

That's the ticket! Excellent idea. That would be a very equitable and honerable trade for a good anvil.
