Sheffield Knife Supply has vegetable tanned leather. I used to buy leather from Tandy Leather Company and also Muir & McDonald and they were both great sources of vegetable tanned leather. Search the net to see if they are still doing business...

I've bought leather from Tandy off and on for 27 years, and it's always been good. A couple of years ago I bought a calf skin side. Vegetable tanned and 2-3oz. However, it doesn't look like the leather in your picture. Yours is finished in some fashion, while the vegetable tanned calf skin was a natural pale tan and required staining and finishing. Look on Tandy's site and see if you can find what you need. http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/

Try the Tandy leather company. I have a sorta dealer ship through them and that is where I get all my leather goods from for a real good price. Thanks, Shane

They sell it in tandy but you have to get at least 15 sq ft.
I don't need so much for my small project. Any idea where i could get smaller portion veg-tanned calf leather? Thanks |

Converting SAE to MM 2 ounce leather would be about .75mm, and 3 ounce would be about 1.1mm. Sportyant, just how big a piece of calfskin do you need? I have some left and might cut you some. The stuff you have in the picture appears to me to be the upholstery leather ,rather light weight. Its distressed waxy kinda. I also have some, I think.I made a foot stool out of it.

Anthony, I don't have a picture of my leather, but you can see it here http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/p...EPT=293&Page=2
It's the Petite Tooling Calf. It is a natural tan color, not the dark antique and distressed color in your original picture. I'll double check it in the morning, but it should be 2-3 oz. It's very firm, but not hard, and it wet forms like a dream. I molded it over the wooden scabbard in the attached picture, then dyed it. Let me know about what size you need and I'll see if I can cut it from the remnant of the side I have. Bushbow, go to Tandy, click on leather, then either on tooling sides or tooling shoulders, bends, bellies, etc. You'll find a selection of vegetable tanned leather from different parts of the cow or calf. This is what you want for a sheath. I like 8-9 oz for sheaths. Latigo is dyed and finished, usually oils and waxes, and is used for things that see outdoor use likes tack, chaps and motorcycle accessories. At least that's what I recall it's used for!
