W pattern Damascus ??

Hi

I am interested in trying to make some Damascus with the W pattern. The problem is that although I like the pattern, I don't know how to create it. I would appreciate it if someone can give me some instruction or further reference (books or turtorials) on how to make this pattern.

Thanks
Brian

I've tried W's, and it is a cool pattern. Weld up your initial billet with whatever layer count you start with (10-20-30), whatever. Then after all the layers have welded solid together, instead of continuing to flatten and lengthen as you would with a normal billet, turn it 90 degrees so that the layers are standing vertical instead of horizontal and forge flat. Cut, restack and continue as you would a regular billet to what ever layer count you desire. Forging the layers in such a manner distorts them in such a way as you end up with the W's. I kow my description sucks, so maby someone else will jump in to clarify for me. Good luck,

Can someone post a photo of this pattern. I think, I understand what you are saying Brain, but I can't picture the result.

Just to clarify before I start pounding steel. You lay the billet on its side and forge flat. when you cut and stack you continue to do so on this side correct? You don't turn it back 90 and forge from the normal side. If I'm wrong let me know please. Thanks Steve

Sounds like your welds would need to be 100% perfect.

Yes, you continue to forge and lay-up the billet in the same manner. Don't turn it back to the "normal" flat side. Althought, I havn't tried that, and maby it would produce some interesting results as well, if you alternated back and forth. Nothing is set in stone with this damascus stuff! And yes your welds should be solid, or the whole thing will pull apart when you squish it in the 90 degree position.
