Textured Blackwood

During one of Ed's classes. 3 years ago I did a handle and guard class. I was really stuggling with fit and design at that time. He taught me a lot during that class. As a bonus he taught me how to carve/ texture handles. I had not practiced any carving or texturing except on a few sheaths. This morning after planting the garden. I needed to relax a little. Ed had suggested that I do the texturing a few months ago when I had him critique this knife. This baby was just so plain before.

Thanks Again Ed

Bing, it looks like you were paying attention in class, 'cause that is a class act. I've always really enjoyed the texturing Ed did on his handles and sheaths. Looks like you have it down pat. -Jim-

NOW THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT!! That TOTALLY changed the look of that knife....and I mean in a GOOD way.

Great job Bing! Let that imagination run...and there's no telling what you can come up with.

Now, tape the handle and the blade off, and put a single fuller around the guard!

One of the reasons I started doing the Carving/Texturing is that at the time, it was something that nobody else was doing. Apparently it's something folks like....because I've been seeing a lot of it lately. Who knows...maybe in the end I can contribute something helpful to this wonderful community we share! (I mean that in the most serious sense).

Ed, Funny thing you mention about fullering the guard. I thought about that last nite after I went to bed. I will do that and update pic's latter this week. I know I need to practice this type of work more. I appoligize to you Ed for not taking more advantage of the lesson given.

Thanks Again Pal

Dana, Maybe when I'm to old to forge , But you should have Ed be the one to give the lessons. The student ( Me) has not even begun to get any where near where I need to be with this. It is a lot different texturing sheath's than doing the hardwood.

Thanks Dana

Yep...

I agree. Ed's the guy and I figure that will be my next class with him .

I forgot to ask what kind of tool are you using to do the texturing, and what kind of bit?

Thanks Bruce!

Ed, Ask and you recieve. Guard is fullered. Your right this thing is starting to come around.

Karl,
I plan on bring it along. I just need to do a little touching up. Probably won't have time to get a sheath made though.

Dana / Mike,
I use a Turbo Carver air powered. It is a less expensive than the GRS model that Ed has. I used the.080 ball on this and sheaths. I have a few smaller ones that I have not tried on anything yet. I still need to do a little touch up on this one. Here is another pic with the guard fullered.

Very nice. IT was good before but that little detail of fullering the guard made all the difference.
