Hats off to knife makers abound!

About five months ago I decided to hang up my hat on the sharpening biz, I live in a rural area 2 miles from a 10k person town and about 45 miles from what you would call a city. Therefore, business wasn't booming.

Anyhow, perusing you tube, I inadvertently came across a knife making channel (3 River Blades - John Kasier) and I was fascinated at what I saw. Bar stock being transformed into a usable tool. Already having a background in metal working and just coming off the knife sharpening gig, this seemed to be something I should pursue. After all, it looked pretty easy.

Boy was I wrong! I knew about welding and mild steel, but I soon found out knife making was another animal entirely! 10- series steel, 5160, 440C, 01, and many others confronted me! I knew about 6010, 7018, etc welding rods, but steel? But, I went into this with confidence I could succeed. So with a 1x30 in hand I set up my shop to learn the craft.

I found a place on the web called Knife Network and joined. I have found the people here to be amazing and always willing to help a newbie. So I settled in and started my trek. Along the way I have learned (and am still learning daily) about stabilizing, normalizing, heat treating, quenching, forming, handle shaping, mystery steel, and loads of other things.

I told you that story to tell you this - I just want to thank everyone here for all the patience you show when dealing with the "wet behind the ears" crowd. Thank you to everyone here, you guys are the best. And a special thanks to Ray, for putting up with my emails about some really beginner questions and not very stylistic CAD drawings!

Anytime Keith. You and the Missus going to make the trek up hill to Trackrock in March? Get your hair singed and your hands dirty?

Not sure Carl, I do stock removal so I don't get singed and wear gloves....lol Maybe we can do it though, have to see how the finances look................in the middle of putting a new roof on the house.
