Why knives?

We could be balcksmiths, jewelers or make hollowware, flatware or silverware, among many things, but we make knives.... why knives?

The only explanation I can give is that I have always wanted to make something......anything.....with my hands and knives seemed like a logical choice since I like them so much.
I am branching out into jewelry and holloware too, among other things.

Where else can you get dirty, burned, cut and smash things with a hammer all at one time?

why not? or...easier to make than guns?
.
seriously, knives appeal to me as a most practical form of expression - anything goes from pure function to pure art.

hmmm... is that why you're always butting your head against things! (my Mom was an Aries and Linda has Aries rising so I am real familiar with Aries types - me I'm Capricorn, the Old Goat.)

Me I've always had an affinity for edged weapons/tools. Never questioned why just have - just born that way I guess.

Maybe that's the way it is with you too Tai (maybe all of us???) - as you said your fate. your destiny. Any one else remember seeing that childhood picture of Tai with a rubber (?) knife in hand and a look of wonderment on his face!

This is a pretty existential question? Why does anyone do anything?

To paraphrase the Zen saying - If a hammer hits an anvil and there is no one there to hear it does it really make a sound?

I better get back to work....

I dunno, I dont really even know how I got started. The way my girlfreind explains it to people is this:

"I was sitting here watching tv and Josh went into the basement and a few hours later he came back up with a knife"

And I have been doing it ever since, I think once you make the first one you cant stop. So, perhaps some bladesmiths are created by accident, they needed a knife one day so they made one and now they can't stop. Perhaps there is a support group out there for people who are addicted to knife making..hehe

Why. Not a clue. The rest of my family all holds knives at arms length with 2 fingers, kind of like dirty diaper but for me.....
I can't say why but I know right now it fits me better than anything else I have done. It is the one thing I can do that is totaly mine, I do it for me, there is no need to comprimise anything about a knife for the powers that be or office politics or not pissing somebody off. If I get a compliment from a customer it is based on my abilities. There are maybe a couple thousand people in the world that can turn out knives as well as we can. Is there any other group that you belong to that is that small on a world scale. When I decide to sign my name to it I am shaking hands on a deal to service this knife for as long as I am able. No lawyers double talk, no weasle words, no comprimise. My name, my word. I guess thats why I make knives.
Steve

I just enjoy it. Ain't got no boss watching over me, only jerk around is me and half the time I'm in outer space. Its in my gene's, just wish I would have started at a younger age. Once I get the hawk bug to go away I'll have to remember if I can still forge a knife.....
