Tom Gray in the shop

Phillip and I spent our entire weekend in the shop with our good friend, Tom Gray. Tom is a potter but he's putting in a ton of effort to learn the craft/art of knifemaking. He wants to make kitchen cutlery, especially Chef's knives.

We spent the weekend working on one piece, a 10" chef's knife. Tom wanted to learn as much as he could in the short time we had. We weren't able to get the piece 100% finished but Tom can finish what needs to be done once he gets back home.

1080 steel
416SS bolsters
Cocobolo scales
Stainless handle bolts
Hand rubbed finish

Here's Tom at work shaping the bolsters/handle

Here's Tom with his beautiful knife.

Next weekend Phillip and I will have another North Carolinian in our shop for some intensive instruction. I'll try to get more pics for you all then.

Tom is very focused and driven to make great chef's blades. He's learning all he can. All he needs to do is continue making knives and improving his skills.

I think we will be seeing a lot more great work from him.

Great looking chef's knife. I will say there is way more to making a chef knife than I thought, great job.

Can you tell I was flat worn out? One looooonnnnnng weekend! We ate great and I was thrilled with what we accomplished. Due to their simplicity, I thought a chef's knife would be the simplest of knives. Duh.
