Need HELP w/temper line!!!!!!
OK, after not finding the info I am looking for I figured I would just ask. I know a temper line is revealed with feric chloride but what is the process? How long do you etch for? and What do you do after etch?
Thanks much. Mace __________________ ABS Journeyman Smith www.laurelrockforge.com "Ain't nothing more useless than a dull knife or a short piece of rope" |

It depends on the steel and if it was edge quench or clay coated.
I delute with water to the color of very weak coffee.and sand the blade to 600 grit.etch ,sand, etch, sand till you get what you want. sometime you get a crisp line some times a foggy line. __________________ Friends may come and go but enemies accumulate. NT screaming gamecock Gann |

I use 1084 and edge quench. I hold the blade in theoil at the depth I want and hold it there until all smoking stops. Then dunk the entire knife and leave until it is cool.
I then mirror polish the blade. I etch in 3/1 mixture of water and FeCl for just a second or two and pull it out and look for unetched places where there may be a fingerprint or something that could prevent etching. If all goes well I put it in and leave it for about one minute. I pull it out and spray it with WD-40 and clean it all up. Then I etch again for about 30-45 seconds. I pull it out and clean it up again. Then I buff it. |
