Weird tempering colours

Hi Guys. Im tempering My blade and its been in the oven for 1 hour. It got a Nice light straw but scattered across the blade it got weird bright purple/blue colours.. It doesnt really look like it tempered different than the rest, it look more like som crazy oxidation i dont undstand.

What cold be the problem? AM I screwed and need to redo the ht? Dont got a pictures rigt now.

I did 3 normalization cycles. One above critical, one just below and one deep cherry red. Then quench in 130 f canonla oil like i use to. It hardened real Nice.

You're fine. You probably have a little oil or something on the blade. The patinas that the steel can form in the tempering oven are very misleading.

I've had similar results with colors on my tempered blade. Will that last as a patina and protect the blade from rust etc.? My blade ended up a sort of bronze color with a little magenta/blue cast in some areas.Kinda like the effect and was hoping it would be permanent.Any thoughts?

The patina will not protect your blades from rust and it will not be permanent unless you coat it with a clear bake on coating.

Thanks Doug, I was afraid that would be the case.Made the knife for my son-in-law and he liked the color, guess I'll let him use it til the finish wears off and then put a regular patina on it.
