Handle finish questions
I just completed a knife kit and finished the handle. The handle is dymmondwood. I was told the Renaissance wax is a good product to seal up the wood. When I buffed the wood with this wax I could not get a shiny finish. I think this just locks out the moisture.
What product can I get that will help put a shine to the wood. I am going to be using dymmondwood and stabilized wood I have purchased white rouge, renaissance wax and I was thinking about getting Stock sheen and conditioner and gun stock wax. suggestions are appreciated. |

Could be. Put a thin layer of wax and let it sit overnight.

That handle material can be hand sanded to 600 grit, then buffed on a loose muslim buffing wheel with Jackson white 51 or pink no scratch polish compound to a very high shine. Just make sure you get all the sanding scratches out as you go to a finer grit of sand paper.
Same thing with COMMERCIAL done stabilized wood. Some home brew stabilization process may not polish to high shine. Use the buffing wheel and polish to get your high shine and apply the wax and hand buff. __________________ RELH |

Did some more research on buffing and compounds. What are your thoughts on the wheels I am using. I am not sure what type they are but I read that sisal wheels are more for a satin opearance. Sating look is exactly what I am getting on the knife handles when using the white rouge or the renaissance wax. I am thinking I am using the wrong buffer wheel and should use a muslim buff wheel.
Also the more I read the less I want a bright gloss on the handle. So if I am using dymonwood and walnut/maple/ oak wood can I use the white rouge/ wax that I have? Any thoughts? Last edited by remist17; 02-04-2013 at 11:23 AM. |
