Pivot Pin Sizes
Hi,
I just noticed one of Ray Rogers' folders on display using a ?.500 pivot pin. I have only used ?.125 pivots so far. What do you guys use to determine when to step up to a ?.156 or ?.187 pivot pins? blade length, thickness, intended use or what combination of these? Thanks Dan |

I use a combination of all those, and I expect most others do too. There are no real rules beyond what you think works for whatever design. For example, no one in their right mind (leaves most of us out, doesn't it?) would use a folder for chopping and have any expectation that it would hold up for long. But, that was one of my major design criteria for the knife you mentioned and that led me to use a .5 " pivot ....

I'm in process of making a folder with a .125 thick x .900 tall x approximately 3.25 long blade. I was pondering using a ?.187 pivot instead of a ?.125. Any preferences?

Dan,
Personally, I like to use the biggest pivot that will fit comfortably into the knife. Not really necessary on a 'gents' knife, but then, you never know when that gent might have to use the knife in a way he didn't originally intend. Robert, I make those pivots from .500 stainless rod and then harden them... |

I believe the 1/2" ones are available from Alpha knife supply as are the 3/16" ones. Frank

A lot of people start out with the .1875 pivot with .125 blade then use the .031 washer.Makes it easy to get the parts to mess together. Easy to find all those parts too.

Its possible to use a 1/2" pivot, without actually using one......by using a bushing. I use 1/8" barrels on most of my folders, but also use a bushing (either 416 from Alpha, or Bronze from MSC) that is .125 ID, and .252 OD. If you leave the bushing 1/2 to 1 thousandth longer than the blade is thick, then when you tighten the pivot screws, it clamps the bushing between the liners, forcing the blade to rotate on the OD of the bushing. Less wear and tear, and adds strength to the pivot. I personally prefer the bronze bushings over the 416 because I can lock them on a pivot, and "spin" fit them to the exact size of the blade's pivot hole. The fact that they come impregnated with oil also makes for a slicker action too.
