Sad day..... Joe Drouin has passed on.
I have just read on the USN forum that Joe Drouin has passed away. He was truly a knifemakers' friend.
We first met him over 10 years ago at a gun show in Tacoma, WA. He was a friend that we always looked forward to seeing again at the shows. Always upbeat & friendly, even when I was just a newbie he had good words to say and an inviting smile. We will miss him Dusty (If this is posted in the wrong spot feel free to move it) |

Sad state of affairs!!
Sad state of affairs when one of the most well known & loved, Custom Knife Collectors of our time passes away & no one is interested enough at all, in all that he has done to promote us as custom knife makers, to even offer Condolences. The other forum I sometimes post on has already had a dozen posts to offer their rememberance in the same amount of time. Is this all we have to look forward to in the future when we die. Which we will.
Some one will post a note of goodby & no one will even bother to reply??? Or maybe I am off base & the folks here have not been around long enough to have been blessed with Joes presence. He had an awsome Custom knife display at all the major shows for longer than I can remember & did a tremendous amount to PROMOTE ALL CUSTOM KNIFE MAKERS. And I for one think he deserves more than this. If none of you on this forum ever knew Joe then I apologize . There are alot of collectors out there now with awsome collections but they never have to time to be friendly with all makers like Joe did, they seem to talk with only those they collect & the rest are beneath them. There is a difference. NO ONE IS EVER BENEATH ME. Also Joe never bought one of my knifes for his collection, but that does make him more or less a friend! I'll confess that until this post that I had never even heard of Joe. I will, however, pass along my condolences to any who did know him, and to his family in their time of loss. Everyone means something to somebody, and to those to whom Joe meant a great deal, I offer my condolences.

Just a quick note to say I am not chewing you all out. I am just surprised that more folks were not touched by his generosity. But in order to do that you would have to be involved in knife making for some time & have went to numerous shows. I am realizing that a lot of you may not fit in that catagory. So I apoligize. I just automatically assume that every one I talk to knew Joe Drouin. It is still such a shame when a caring man such as this, that spent all his Life time promoting handmade knives dies, that there is not more of a sense of loss in our community. Something that my Dad who is 72 years old tells me often although I have not seen him in 2 years, is that I have something that he doesn't. I will be able to leave a part of me behind that will be remembered for years. But when he is gone that is about it.
What are we leaving behind & will we be remembered as good or bad or not at all?? Dusty Last edited by Dusty Moulton; 08-16-2004 at 01:55 PM. |

This is what I posted on the other forums. . Been cleaning up after the storm myself.
Joe was one of the first people that I met at my first Blade Show in Knoxville in 1985. I had only read about the knives that he had on display. He encouraged me to hold them and to feel them in my hands. It was during our long conversation that I mentioned that I had started a small collection of knives. Joe was the one who encouraged me to put together and display my first collection of about R.H. Ruana knives. I won the judges award that year and dispalyed my collection for many years until it got to the point that I could not manage the collection and sales table. I would look forward to seeing Joe at every show and to look at those beautiful knives. I feel sure that Joe and his collection had a lot to do with many of the collections that you see displayed at the various shows. he will be missed. Bobby |

Joe Druin is a very big name in knife circles, I am saddened by his passing.
I have never met Joe and only know of him by his reputation and what I've read in the various magazines. He will be missed. Sorry Dusty would have chimed in sooner, haven't been online for a few days (computer problems). __________________ Jerry Oksman ~ Cogito Cogito Ergo Cogito Sum ~ |

I, too, am sorry to hear of Joe's passing, though I never met him. I did read more than one article about him in the knife mags through the years. I'm surprised, since I've been a regular at the Blade Show for quite a while.
Dusty, I don't think anyone was being indifferent- I know I didn't even see your first post until I read the second one. It is always sad when a good man and a kindred spirit leaves us. |

This is the first that I have heard of this Dusty its always sad to have a friend pass on and its very hard to overcome . I did not know Joe but im sure i have seen his collection ,and feel that i would have liked him as a person just to hear you talk of him . Dusty I can tell you have a loss in your hart that's hurting . I lost a knife making friend and collector a few years back Dusty and like you I wondered why , also like you i looked forward see him each year , we meet at the blade show each year for 6 years to talk knives ,laugh, tease each other walk the blade show and meet with other friends ,even to this day I miss him each time I see that empty seat that we preset to be at before the show , I like you Dusty know the hurt and loss of a great friend ,That has gone on . But Dusty I feel some day we will all be at a great place that we will see each other again sorry for the loss of your good friend ,and i feel he knows just how you feel. Dusty, I sure hated to hear about Joe. I just recently got to view the display of his collection at the Blade Show in Atlanta. You could actually see the history of custom knives in his collection as the styles, and quality of work, changed over the years. He was a true friend to knifemakers, he'll certainly be missed by many.

Dusty, I appreciate your sense of loss. There is a sadness in every passing, if we will take the time to consider the good in every man, and our own mortality. I never knew Joe D. to my misfortune, on the basis of your words, which I respect. However, there are some of us who have been doing this a while, but never got into the show circuit, that would not have knwn Joe D. personally. So, and go gently here Brother, please dont take it as sign of disrespect or insensitivity if other have not posted in response.
Peace Out. |
