steel supplier

I know there are some older threads on this subject, but do any of you guys have any leads on a low price supplier for metal? The most recent posts I could find were over a year old, and with this economy businesses come and go like my gas after eating broccoli.

Admiral has some pretty decent prices from what I can find, but after shipping it starts getting a little higher.

Any new players who can meet our needs?

Thanks all

New players? Probably not. Do you have Southern Tool Steels? The New Jersey Steel Baron, aka Aldo Bruno, is a knife maker who only stocks steel for knife making.

Whoa there hoss! "Steel" is a wide open field and not all suppliers supply all kinds of steel. What kind of steel you want might depend on what you plan to do with it: do you forge? Will you do the HT yourself? Tell us what you want to make and how you plan to handle the HT and you'll probably get much better information that simply what our personal favorite steel and supplier might be ....

Apologies for the vagueness. Based on your recommendation from another thread, I'm going to be going 440C. I'll be doing solely stock removal, and until I can convince my wife i "Need" my own HT oven, I'll be sending the blades out. I'll be doing small blades, primarily less than 8" or less over all length.

Thanks for all of the responses!

A few years back flat-stock.com had some of the best prices on A2, O1, D2. Haven't checked their prices lately though so not sure if they are still a good deal.

I see they have "440" but they don't say if its a,b,c...if the prices are right you might want to give them a call to see which it is.

Most of the regular knife supply houses have 440C in small quantities. And, you definitely want C, not A or B. Check alphaknifesupply.com , they handle drops and excess inventory pieces so their steel is top quality with a smaller cost. If they don't have what you want, then Jantz or one of the others should have 440C. It is a little scarce at the moment if you want thin stock but 1/8" or thicker shouldn't be a problem. Texas Knifemakers will do the HT for about $5 ...
