Homemade 2x72 Belt Sander

Hi all I got a little tired of dealing with a 1x30 belt sander and after many hours of YouTube videos I decided to make my own. I went to the scarp yard off Hwy 64 in Yadkinville NC and got me some Steel.. $17.49 worth of material. Then I cut it to size and weld it together, to my surprise it works GREAT. The 3/4 hp electric motor was $3.00 from a yard sale, and the skate board wheels were FREE...... I will be getting a stronger Electric motor so, but for now this will do.
Here are some of the pics .

Comments are welcome!!!!!!!

A little ingenuity and some fabrication skill will take you a long way! Nice welding, should be a great grinder....

Great job! Could very well be the cheapest grinder build so far but you would never guess by looking at it.

Nice MIG welds, did you do them yourself? Use CO2 or Argon? (I'm an ex welder, mostly TIG)
Great fabrication and over built so structural failure isn't a concern. Happy Grinding.
Skateboard wheels, lol

Thank you, the welding was actually done with CO2/Argon. I wanted to make sure the structure wouldn't fall apart....lol and yes for now skate board wheels they actually work great.

I've been looking at this with the little gears in my noggin turning...

Is that a door hinge I see at the top? For tracking adjustment? I'm trying to decide how that wheel is mounted to the hinge, if that is a hinge. Do you just have it bolted on? If so, that seems like a "weak link" so to speak.

Also, that little half moon arrangement of drilled holes. I assume that is to tilt the platen forward and back? So the "tool rest" is stationary and the platen tilts? Why do you need a tilting platen? (I'm not challenging, being new at all this, just trying to understand. I don't have a 2 x 72 and currently saving for a KMG but looking at all options)

I'm also assuming the motor could be mounted forward, with some pillow blocks mounted rear-ward with three step pulleys to power the drive wheel.

You want a tilting platen so that you can grind angles such as for dove tailed bolsters. When I put my initial edge on a new blade I tilt the platen back a few degrees and then draw the blade across the running belt as if it were a sharpening stone. With the platen tilted I can hold the blade perpendicular to the ground which is easier to do than trying to hold the blade at a consistent angle to a fixed platen ...
