How to keep proportions right when reshaping?
Hi everyone. I'm not sure the correct question I wanted to ask in the title, I tried several ways of expressing it properly but keep sounding odd to me.
I saw an old knife about to be dumped because it is in poor shape and I decided to save it. Has the appearance of an Asian cooking knife but has been poorly sharpened, it's a little over 9.5? from the heel to the tip, but the first 1-2? of the tip is quite thin and a bit curved looking, probably because it's out of proportion. As a conservative estimate, I reckon if I could some how reset the proportions and grind it back to a kitchen knife shape, I'd still be left with an 8? blade. The problem is, when I put ?reshaping knife blade proportionally? into search engine it spits out knife sharpening, where to buy knives etc but nothing to do with reshaping. Can you please explain the procedure of how to reshape proportionally? This is a task I'd like to undertake myself if possible. I hope you get the gist of what I'm trying to explain and ask. LOL, no pun intended about shape. Last edited by Dogma; 08-13-2013 at 12:06 AM. Reason: No pun |

You will simply have to re-grind it to the shape you want and re-edge it. Keep it cool by quenching in water every few seconds to not lose the temper. I don't think any search engine would know what you want it to look like. I believe you are over thinking the project.

I agree with WBE, it's going to be a personal preference thing in the end. So, just grind it a bit, look at it a bit and continue until you get it looking like you want.
You might take a sharpie and mark off your profile change first to get a better idea of what it will look like when altered. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |

I just want to make it look and function like a kitchen knife again, I'm just not sure how to go about reshaping it and leeping its proportions/profile right. |

Post a side view and top view of the blade. Maybe one of us can photoshop it to help you (us) see what is being asked/discussed. Might be a good little learning thread.

May have to open up a free account with photobucket. Once you drop your pics there you will have an url to attach from.
However, usually if you have been posting regular on KNF and for awhile you can go to "go advanced" below the "Reply" window, hit the paper clip icon and it will allow you to navigate to your stored pic on your computor that you can select and load. You will need to make sure you have resized them before you load them up. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |
