Knifemaking Class in Dunwoody, GA

I will be teaching a basic knifemaking class at the Spruill Arts Center. I will be teaching with Tom Beard who is one of the metal arts teachers at the center. Tom has a wealth of experience in forging and metal work. We will leverage his knowledge plus my experience in knifemaking to present a complete basic class.

I intend to go from bar stock to finished knife. We will have two weekends, Saturday and Sunday for the class. I will be providing all materials except safety equipment.

If you know of anyone who is interested in knifemaking but does not have access to tools, it would be a great opportunity for them. The details are in the link below, or you can check out the Spruill Arts center page and scroll down in the list of classes in the Jewelry department.

Thanks,
Paul Brach

Update: The class was a lot of fun. We sent everyone home with two heat treated blades, one forged and one ground. We roughed in the handle on the ground knives and got the handles glued up on the forged knives. The students will have a lot of filing and sanding to do at home to finish their pieces, but they got to forge, grind, heat treat, fit guards, solder guards, taper tangs, set pins, glue up a tapered full tang and a hidden stick tang.

Looks like you had a good class Paul. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Missed you at TR, especially the evening technical sessions. Remember the next TR is the last weekend in March 2014.

We had a record crowd of young folks trying out hammers on hot steel. My buddy, Scout (not so little anymore at 13), has all his own setup now...anvil, forge, tools and huge gear box. He forged a few blades for himself then spent the rest of the weekend teaching other youngsters a little about bladesmithing. Really something to watch.
