Both those suppliers are good. But, when it comes to O1 Nolan Supply in Syracuse generally beats everybody's price by a huge margin. It more than makes up for long distance shipping. They don't have a website that I know of so call them for a catalog:

Try contacting Melvin Burgard at: 1-800-468-9888 or expresssteel@xta.com. He is a steel broker and will find you the best price as well as being a super nice guy to deal with.

Here's a link for Nolan. They go under 'National Supply', so it's easy to lose them in your favorites.

What a price difference!
Ordered my 01 1/4"x3"x18" from Tool and Die for $19.18 and it will be shipped today from Kentucky to WV. Admiral steel wanted $43.19 for the same thing. Mike

just on a cautionary note, sometimes the cheapest price isn't the best deal. I remember back in the late 80's my father and I were making everything out of 440c doing stock removal. There were only a few knifemaker supply places. After ordering steel from each we noticed one suppliers steel warped less during heat treatment and got better feedback from our customers. It turns out that the mills making the steels have differing qualities of steel. One supplier might be cheaper simply because the mill supplying the steel has a broader acceptance range than another. Just keep that in mind. I am trying to buy steel now from as many different sources and through my own analysis decide on who I will buy steel from for now. Remember though the supply houses have no control over the mills quality. Just keep that in mind when you come across great deals in steel.

Hi Jimmy, I definately agree. Cheapest isn't bestest most times. This steel is from Presco ( Precision-marshall ) I think the reason it is so cost effecive is it is drop shipped directly from the factory. I was using starrett steel before I found these guys, I like this steel even better. I'm not sure what the mix difference is, they are listed as the same, but I'm getting a better preforming knife with this stuff.
And no I'm not on the payroll |
