Guard, no guard....
This is a small neck knife I started putting together today. The blade is just sitting in the handle at this time. I like the looks of it with out a guard but would like some input on the subject... When I get it finished I'll post a picture of it and what the steel came from. The handle is a cow horn tip.....

I'm thinking a short guard would balance that knife real well Ray. But that's just me.

Now that is a tough one,as it is she looks like a sweet little patch style knife,But a small guard would also add some character also.
Me I say flip a coin and see which way it says to go. Either way it will look sweet. Bruce |

Upset Guard ??
If there is some meat left how about upsetting a guard, works, easy with a hot propane torch, and all the grinders scratch their heads, how the heck do you do that!, Not that there is anything here against grinders, just forging is funner, in my hot iron opinion. I got a grinder and it is a great tool, mostly used for non knives, hot, cold iron work.

Gene, You know I was thinking about doing that but it slipped my mind. This blade is already heat treated, I've got two or three others that aren't but not sure if I got enough meat to do that with. I haven't tried that yet but I remember the post you did awhile back on doing that....

well, I'd flip the little blade on it's spine and carefully pein the the finger cutout, for a little more bearing surface on the finger and leaf off the guard. I like it like that.

I like it the way it is. I thing that sometimes we knife makers get to completed in our thinking about how a knife should be put together. I would finish it up just the way you are going with one of your pommels that have a lanyard ring. Gib

I can't find the knife..... Thanks guys! I finished up the handle last night and its just beautiful. The horn tip I used was sitting on my bench in a pile with everything else back in January. Bruce Evans was over and had spotted it and said it would make a great handle. I had never even given it a thought cause it was in such bad shape when he was here. Just looked like another piece of crap in the pile......

Ray, I just can't believe this. You just posted a pic of the knife and now you can't find it? Good grief I have a bad case or CRS but you really need help, I would suggest that you build another one, that was a nice knife. OF#2

Thats funny Ray! I lost my little head bolt blacksmith knife for about a week. It turned up yesterday in the floorboard of the van under some fast food bags. I am going to try and water quench it to see if that will harden it up like Sweeny suggested.
