mystery phenomenon (no knife content)
I just got home from a motorcycle tour to Vegas and stopped by the Grand Canyon. The clouds that day were majestic, so I took several shots with my little 6mp snapshot camera.
When I saw these clouds (actually, my buddy pointed them out) I was astonished. I've never seen color like that in clouds. My first thought was a reflection of lights from the canyon, but the effect was limited to these three strands of sirrus clouds and the sky was full of them (as well as stunning cumulous clouds). I thought I would ask those of you who have taken many more photos than I if you've ever seen this phenomenon in nature before. The first shot is the raw image and looks pretty much as it did to the eye. The second is enhanced through MGI Photosuite. ...sure was pretty though. __________________ Andy Garrett https://www.facebook.com/GarrettKnives?ref=hl Charter Member - Kansas Custom Knifemaker's Association www.kansasknives.org "Drawing your knife from its sheath and using it in the presence of others should be an event complete with oos, ahhs, and questions." Nice capture.
I am wondering if it might be a similar effect like a rainbow, sun shining through some moisture with the addition of some upper level wind. |

Hey Andy,
You're a lucky guy! Every time I see clouds like that, my camera is nowhere to be found. These clouds are caused by a very specific set of circumstances - high altitude cirrus clouds, ice crystals flat and parallel to the ground, and sun at the right angle. When I was commuting to Boston every day (150-mile round trip) I had plenty of opportunity to see interesting atmospheric phenomena, but never the ability to stop and take pics. I tried once with my cell-phone, but that came out too poorly to even tell it was a cloud, never mind a colorful one. __________________ Kurt Huhn pipecrafter@pipecrafter.com http://www.pipecrafter.com |

Cool! I figured someone here would know!
Thanks brother! That's been buggin' me for a week now! I just wonder why these were the only affected clouds with so many in the sky that day. __________________ Andy Garrett https://www.facebook.com/GarrettKnives?ref=hl Charter Member - Kansas Custom Knifemaker's Association www.kansasknives.org "Drawing your knife from its sheath and using it in the presence of others should be an event complete with oos, ahhs, and questions." |

Those are sometimes referred to as 'sun dogs'. Mark Twain mentions them in 'The Mysterious Stranger".

Well..., I did some research and found what I believe is the answer. The 'sun dog' theory is cool, but I don't think that's it.
I'm pretty sure it is a reletively common phenomenon called 'irisation' or 'cloud iridesence'. These are also really cool if you happen to catch them:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_dogs and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_pillar I've only seen each one once, about a week apart in mid-February of last year when the air was dead still and *COLD*. Both times I was in the truck on my way to work, and without my camera. I started carrying my camera in my truck after that. __________________ Kurt Huhn pipecrafter@pipecrafter.com http://www.pipecrafter.com |
