Scale Joinery

I've seen Eli's work in joining different woods together to make some awesome scales. I want to give it a try. I have some African blackwood and cherry burl. I am looking for pointers on joining these prior to attaching.

This will be an end grain joint. What adhesive does one use on the wood? Any tricks or techniques? Any species of wood to avoid?

Thanks,

Dan

I'm no pro, but I've used super glue and it seems to work well, just make sure to clean good with acetone first.

These were done that way.

There are glues made especially for wood such as Titebond III (available at your local hardware store). I'm not sure what Eli does but it works for him. If I were doing it I would add some kind of pin between the pieces, just a piece of rod material since I have learned never to trust any glue to hold a knife together. Once the scale is glued up and set, then I would use AcraGlas between the scale and the tang ...

I use Elmers wood glue for all my woodworking, been using it for over 30 years and in my experience it is a stronger bond than the wood itself. But - I've never worked with stabilized wood, so?

I have successfully used waterproof/resistant carpenter's glue before in making cutting boards from different hardwoods, these joints hold up well, but they are not generally glued end grain to end grain.

My thought was to drill tiny holes, say 1/64" in the joint surfaces and use epoxy. I would like have a smidgen of confidence that the joint will last. If I had the skill to do a dovetail that small there would be less doubt. Hmm, sounds like a challenge.

Thanks,

Dan
