stitching groove
Tom: I hope Sandy and Mike Tea and Dave come in on this too. I don't know that there is any set distance, but I use 1/8", 3/16" and 1/4" from the unfinished edge. 3/16" is probably the most common in my shop. This allows me to take one last trip to the finisher to smooth the edges one more time before the final burnishing. This will still leave about 1/8"+ on the final product. If you are hand stitching I think I'd use the 3/16" or maybe even the 1/4". Now lest's see what the other guys say. Regards

Tom, I pretty much do it like Paul at 3/16"- 1/4". Like Paul said once its stitched you can go to doing your final finish on the edge. And I do handstitch. Hope this helps.Dave

I too handsew and generally use 3/16"-1/4" but....
much depends on the item - the heavier thicker items need a bit wider allowance. For sheaths and holsters I generally recommend to any students (especially newbies) I've had/have around 5/16" to start - this allows enough extra to sand/trim away without getting yourself in trouble by being too close to begin with - you can always take more away but it's bloody hard "fixing" an oops at that point and why take the chance. BTW - sheathmaker aka Paul - I got your letter/brochure - nice stuff!!! Sorry I haven't gotten back to you before this (too much work - too little time ) and since I haven't said it before - at least not that I can remember  - welcome to TKN's sheathmaking forum __________________ Chuck Burrows Hand Crafted Leather & Frontier Knives dba Wild Rose Trading Co Durango, CO chuck@wrtcleather.com www.wrtcleather.com The beautiful sheaths created for storing the knife elevate the knife one step higher.
