List?

Anyone have or know where to find a list of steel ordered by the required quench type? Or A list of air quenched steels? Including ones that CAN be air OR oil quenched? Thanks in advance!

Someone who knows there stuff should put together a sticky for all the metals used in knife making and sort them by water quenched, Air quenched, and Oil quenched with a space for the steels that require Odd quenching like Polymer, Brine, Etc.

The problem with this is that one person might say that something like 1075 should be quenched in water then another would come along and say that brine is more reliable and less likely to break the blade then a third might recommend that neither be used but the quench should be done in a fast oil. It's all going to depend on the experience of makers using different quenchants.

As far as what steels are water, oil, or air quenching you will just have to read the data sheets for that alloy. There is little good in having a big list of steels when the list of available steels for the knife maker is rather short.

And many of the steels that can be air quenched can also be oil quenched with better results where knife blades are concerned. Basically, you're looking for a compilation of data that is on the spec sheets for a list of metals that is short for beginner's steels and much longer and constantly changing for advanced steels. Such a compilation, if it existed, that merely specified the acceptable quench methods would ignore the various reasons why you might want to air quench X steel in one case and oil quench it for another. It is far simpler to either simply accept the advice offered here and apply it or, if that doesn't work for you, then pick a steel and read the spec sheets so you get the complete picture on quenching that steel ...
