Leather Question

I'm still new to the sheath and holster making and am pretty much self taught. I feel that I'm starting to produce some professional quality stuff. However, I know there is still a ton to learn. Thats why I keep reading and asking questions such as this one.
Most everything that I've seen or read suggest using double (or single) shoulders for sheaths and holsters, etc.. Why can't sides of the same weight be used for producing these items?

Thanks,

Scott

No reason not use sides except you wind up with more belly leather - if you have a splitter this can be split down for linings or overlays, but for me any way it is generally scrap. Thus many smaller shop custom sheath/hoster makers buy shoulders since there is less belly leather (aka scrap) or you can go with backs/bends which include NO belly leather and is the best of the best cut of leather especially for belts or where you want no stretch.

basically shoulders are the best bang for the buck with smaller items like sheaths and holsters.
