Dyeing question
I am new to this site and to sheath and knife making and have only about 8 sheaths completed. I have only dyed one of my sheaths (with Fiebings) and after a good day or three to dry finished it with a water-proofing beeswax called `Snowseal`. I let it all air dry for a good week and then put the knife back in. The knife is a stick tang with a caribou antler handle sealed with a clear varnish. A day or so later I took the knife out and was shocked to see some brown dye on the nice white antler. I was able to use a cloth to briskly wipe the dye off the handle, so it was not permanent. Any ideas why that happened? Was it the beeswax or the clear varnish that could have caused it? Thanks!

Did you buff out the dye after application?

You need to use some form of sealer over the dye or it will bleed out onto your handle.
I use tancoate to seal my dyes then wax my sheaths. I imagine the snow seal has a petroleum or oil base and has acted as a "carrier" for you dye, which helped bleed it through the leather onto your handle. __________________ Carl Rechsteiner, Bladesmith Georgia Custom Knifemakers Guild, Charter Member Knifemakers Guild, voting member Registered Master Artist - GA Council for the Arts C Rex Custom Knives Blade Show Table 6-H |
