Working with Walrus Ivory
I have some outside ivory from a walrus tusk that I would like to slab and use as handle material. I have never worked with Walrus before, can you give me any pointers? What do I need to watch out for and avoid or what is the best way to cut and polish it.

Hi Steve! I have some experience with sawing & polishing ivory for my scrimshaw. I always use a fine metal saw (or jewellers saw) with small teeth, never let the ivory get too hot while sawing. If you want to polish the ivory, just use some sanding paper (start with something like n? 600) and go to a finer grid each step. I use n? 2000 (from jewellers supplies) for final grid and polish with clean cloth & a little toothpaste (it works fine). Succes with it! Greetings, Paulie

walrus work
hello
i have recently worked for the first time fossil walrus ivory. i have found in the last helsinki knive show a large piece, 15cm lenght by 6cm/4CM. I have made large slices, 2.5cm thick, to make the central part of my handle. it's practically as hard as mammoth molar, the both are fossils. i have used metal band saw in avoid warmed the piece. After for the finishing it's like the others materials. in my slices i have found some smalls holes, perhaps carrie dental. ivory powder, salvaged when i make the central hole for my hidden tang, and cyanolite glue to fill the holes. regards philippe http://repiton.blogspot.fr/ |
