Price of a Custom Knife

Been showing off on another forum ( and this one). I have made or finished 3 or 4 knives in the last 4 years . Probley why I haven't made more knives people are worried about the price. I'm NOT going to spend hours in the shop and sale them for what you can buy a knife for at Wal-Mart. At a show one time a guy ask the price of a knife and I said 250 he thought it was 2.50, I said no $250. and he walked away .
What is your idea of custon knife prices?? Or do you not want to discuss it on a open forum?
Thanks Art

A lot of makers have recipes for pricing thier knives. A lot of difference is whether you are a fulltime maker, quality of work and yes time spent and last material cost. I feel we knifemakers will never be paid enough for the work a fine knife represents. We battle factory made knives. If you make knives for fun, hope that you can recover the price of materials and call it a day. If for a profit, then you have to come up with your recipe. Good luck.

Hi Art,

Part of the custom knifemaker's responsibility is educating potential customers WHY a knife costs this much. Of course you can purchase a production-made piece at substantially less and it may perform quite well. A newbie will compare this mindset to your knives.

What you have to instill is that you are selling a piece of handmade craftsmanship and oftentimes artistry, that a factory knife can not include.

Let me wax poetic for a moment: There is an intangible need in the human spirit to support and admire our fellow men. Purchasing a Custom Knife is a small reflection of this, and in doing so gives a buyer or collector extra pride. He is carrying a Custom knife as a reminder of the maker's abilities and his character.

There is no way to accurately price this aspect. You have to set your own pricing to what you're minimum satisfaction level is, and then sell it with both the performance and handmade attributes as it's reason for the cost.

Deep enough?

Coop
