making the backbar

today's final picture

and a little video, the knife already works quite fine, needs just grind on the blade, scales, and open-state lock, finishing, and should be done....####, that's quite a lot of work

Question, how big of a spring did you use for the button? The ones I've got in the shop seem to be too long to hide in a reasonable sized bolster. Thanks for any help. Ryan Minchew

mine are 1/8" in diameter, and about 1/4" long-the button has a drilled hole from the underside, and the spring gets hidden there.

I'm going to pass on this one, Papi.

I don't like the idea of having a counterbore in the blade pivot area.

I've enjoyed your WIP and am looking forward to seeing your finished folder.

Thank you.

You don't have to if you feel uncomfortable doing the counterbore, just do the same thing as with the bolster. I didn't do it like that, because my blade is very thick on this one, so it wasn't necessary. But you can create a channel around the blade pivot hole, making room for the spring, and leaving enough material to contact your pivot pin at the same time

To answer the question, I haven't started yet. I plan to soon, very soon. I have a specific plan for this knife. My son is currently going through the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy "boot camp", a 6-month very intense training session for new troopers. When he finishes, I want to present him with this knife. It'll be my first auto. Actually I think I'll do all the machining but let him put in the spring if he so chooses.
