First Framelock is finished, thanks to T. Anderson et al!

I just finished up my first framelock folder and it went rather smoothly, thanks in part to Tom Anderson's excellent tuitorial and all the other tips and tricks I have picked up around these forums. Thanks to Tom, Peter Atwood and everyone else who have shared their experiences!

This knife is Ti and green canvas Micarta, blade is BG-42 4mm thick RC 60. The blade turns on a bronze bushing, custom pivot and phosphor bronze washers. Clip is bought but I am designing my own ! Blade length is about 3 1/2 inches.

great knife

just perfect looking, how does it feel when the blade is open what with there being no scale on the frame lock side?

Love the design, specially the thumb-hole, or lack of, or maybe part of for opening...just cool!

That's a great knife. I can tell you put a lot of effort into it, and you did a really great job. I like the slim design. Very nice.

that's a beauty, kevin. nice work.
.
on the next one, you might think about locating the clip over the long lock cut. i think it helps to prevent overbending the lockbar by adding tension on the bar when they touch.

Very nice Kevin! Looks like you put a lot of time into the fit and finish on that one. Interesting blade shape.

Thanks everybody! I forgot to say thanks to Chris Reeve ;-) every time I've meet him over the years he has always had a few good tips and encouragement for me.

The lack of grip scale on the one side doesnt feel bad at all. All corners are radiused. The flat is fine bead blasted and the edges are polished. Lock up is rock solid too. The Ti is 3.25 mm thick and is double radius machined like the Sebenza. I used a 10mm radius mill but have switched overr to a full carbide 12 mm radius. That sucker cost real money but does a great job on the Ti.

I am also still milling the slit but I think I see why you guys use a slitting saw. Looks like there more tooling I need :-) However a full carbide 1.5mm mill does a pretty good job on the Ti. I bought a bunch of them for about $1 each from a guy in Holland so when they break I dont cry too long.

The blade shape is actually rather practical because you can hook your thumb in the cutout to quickly close the blade or to give more leverage when cutting around something. But its one of those things either you like it or you dont. I make more traditional blades too. This knife will go to Austria but I have arranged with the buyer so that I will have on my table at the German Show in Solingen on the 10th and 11th of May.

I have been milling away this weekend and now I think I will head out into the kitchen and see whats doing in the beer department... ;-)

Very intriguing design. I love the blade shape.

A couple of questions if you don't mind:

You've got micarta on the liner side but the lock side is pure Ti. Not clear from the pictures but I'm assuming the liner is much thinner Ti than the lock. Or is the liner side pure micarta with no Ti?

What is the function of the set screw on the lock side pivot?

Thanks!

The lock side is 3.2mm Ti and the other side is Linenmicarta that's also about the same thickness.

The washers are phosphor bronze with a sintered bronze bearing rotating around a hard stainless custom pivot. The small screw - 0-80 Torx - keepr the pivot from rotating on its own axis. As the pivot is tightened onto the bearing and washers, there is minimal friction wear to the Ti or to the Micarta.

There is a slight tradeoff between long wear and light weight when using the Micarta alone, but unless the knife is opened 100s of times a day, it should last a long time.

I haven't seen the tutorial myself but if I were looking for it, I'd look on his website. His website is listed with his post at the top of this very same thread.

Other tutorials can be found using the blue How To key at the top of this page....
