I've had a number of emails regarding my surface grinder so I decided to add a picture of mine. As I mentioned I bought it second-hand so it ain't new, I estimate that it was made in the late 1930's or 40's, and it's pretty basic but it has a good 6"x12" magnetic chuck and it does the job, even if is slow. I use a Norton wheel made for stainless and I take small cuts (.001") and finish with .0005" cuts. I dress the wheel regularly so I can get a nice finish.

And as a item of interest thefollowing is a picture of 3 O1 templates of the same basic folder enlarged useing a photo-copier. The middle one is the size used in this project and at present I'm building a folder using the small one.

Neil,
Thanks for the great tutorial. I can now appreciate the effort and skill it takes to build a folder (no wonder they are more expensive than fixed blades). All in all, how many hours/days does it take to build one (minus engraving)?
I've been to your table once (about 8-10 years ago) at a small knife show in Melbourne when I was still a student at Monash. Couldn't afford anything then but it was educational to see all the nice cutlery.

It normally takes me about 24 working hours to build a folder but that can vary substantially according to the materials used.
