Converting a log splitter to a press?

I have a 16 ton log splitter that i dont use much any more. (now have natural gas, available at the shop to)
I am considering converting it to use on hot seel. It has a 4 inch diameter cylinder at 2600 lb. Would a 16 ton press be large enough to be worthwhile or would i be wasting my time??

There are a couple of things to think about when considering this conversion.

I have a 24 ton cylinder ini my press, sometimes I wish I had more. However, if you think about this logically you will see that your cylinder will work. A four inch cylinder probably has a 1 3/4" shaft (Rod). Therefore your 16 tons comes when you are pusing with a die that is 1 3/4" in size. If you make a die that is 5" X 5" and mount it on your shaft, the 16 tons will divide its push power to cover the entire 25 square inches and your press will not be nearly as strong when trying to squeeze something that large.

Your answer, your log splitter will work fine if your dies are kept relatively small.

Now, you need to decide if you plan to make a new frame or use the log splitter frame. If you were to change to an H frame design you could add a second 4" cylinder without too much trouble and for probably only about $150 or so. Now you have 32 tons and can use that 5" X 5" die if you want. I made my press in a manner to add another cylinder if I want to, so far I have not needed to do so.

You will also most likely want to convert from the gas engine to a 5HP electric motor. I am constantly turning my press on and off and you will not want to have to restart your engine every time you need to squeeze something for 10 seconds.
