grinding a distal taper

How do you grind you distal taper. I am making a 14" carving knife for the kitchen and want a distal taper from the front of the bolster t the tip. I was planning on using my surface grinder but can't quite figure out how to do it. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Steve

You're having that trouble because you are trying to approach knife making as a machinist rather than a craftsman or an artist. Since it is not obvious to you how to set the machine up to do that job, well, you aren't a machinist. I've seen some of your knives though and you are a knife maker. Take the blade in your hands and start grinding until you get the taper you want. True, it isn't easy on those long blades but it's not all that difficult either. Practice, practice, practice ......

Thanks Ray
I spend all my days working with numbers so my first instinct is to calculate. Let the artist out which is why I make knives.
Thanks
Steve
