bolster tang gap issue
Just finished up a fixed blade with a tapered tang with front and rear bolsters. As I was puttin gthe final polish on I noticed a fine gap between the front bolsters on the top and the tang. The rear bolsters are fine, the bottom of the bolster is fine but both sides of the top show a faint gap. Is there a way to fix this? And how do you prevent it in the first place.

I suspect spacers were originally added to address the problem of fit, not just to dress up the looks.
If the wood's not stabilized, it can shrink or expand a bit. It doesn't take much to get a gap. It will be interesting to see what 'fixes' get posted for a very common problem. __________________ God bless Texas! Now let's secede!! |
