Who remembers the KNIFE-LIST?
Many moons ago a lot of us knifemakers and wannabees subscribed to a bulletin board called the KNIFE-LIST. This was long before anybody invented a forum. It was sent similar to email either daily or weekly depending on how you wanted to sign up.
It consisted simply of discussions between members, with questions, answers, shop tips, etc. Of course that was before digital cameras and high speed internet, so there were no attachments or pictures. I'd like to have a little "fond memories" discussion with you guys about the List. The list was owned by a maker named Clark, as I recall, who lived in New Mexico. No charge for membership, and he did a wonderful job. I can remember a few members: Don Cowles A.T.Barr Darrell Ralph? Mike Fitzgerald Johnny Stout? Now who can list other members? I remember that while I was figuring out the locking/pivot mechanism for a locking liner design, A.T. told me where I could buy a sheet of Nylatron for making washers. Several people helped me with suggestions for hollow grinding a blade. I built a 2x72 belt grinder from scratch onto the top and back side of a Craftsman roll around tool chest. The 8" work wheel was located down between my knees when seated in a chair so that I was looking directly down at the blade with my elbows supported on my knees. Good grinder. I used it for a few years and finally sold it to a guy who had started a knifemaking school. So, you old timers like me, let's have a little old fashioned nostalgia remembering the old and great KNIFE-LIST. You younger guys chime in too! |

Hi, Don!
I enjoyed that list, too. I seem to remember posts from David Broadwell, Mike (aardvark) Alexander, and occasionally from Wayne Goddard. It's been long enough I may be confusing it with TKCL, too. Every so often, I think about a series of lengthy posts that were done on files and how to do precision filing. IIRC, it was done by someone named Steve. I wish I had saved those posts to pass on to newbies, as they were an excellent composition on the subject. Thanks for bringing this up. I look forward to what others may have to say. |

Hi there, Mike!
There was a very well known folder maker with ...stein or something like that on the end of his last name. Lived in the Dallas area. Terry Knipstein? I was going to make a hollow grinding fixture and he advised me to forget it and do it by hand. Turns out he was right. Yep, I believe Wayne Goddard was there. This should be fun. |

Mike, remind me what the TKCL was. I was a member, but I've forgotten.

Yes, Ray, of course. I had it mixed up. Russ owned the list and moderated.
Thanks. Maybe I can sum up all the names we get here later. |

Bob Engnath was on the list, too, as was JP Hrisoulas, Darryl Meier, and Howard Clark.
I really wish I'd saved some of the information shared there somewhere besides my feeble brain... Remember the list-knife? That was me who submitted the winning design (no one else submitted one, I recall, so mine won). __________________ A good friend told me one time about forging "What is there not to like, you get to break all the rules you were told as a kid, don't play with that it is sharp, don't play with fire, and don't beat on that" Wade Holloway See some of my work. |

The name I tried to remember was either Terry Knipstein or Terry Knipshield. Which was it, and what happened to him?
Howard Clark helped me, and of course Bob Engnath helped everybody. I used to feel sorry for Bob, standing at his grinder turning out several blades an hour. He didn't seem to mind it, though. |

Terry Knipschield is still making knives, but he's in Minnesota.
Steve Pryor was a list member, as was Ron "Bowie" Claiborne, I believe. I *think* I remember Rick Furrer being a member, too, but that may just be bad brain cells. LOL Last edited by fitzo; 03-05-2009 at 08:08 PM. |

I remember Ron and Steve too. The maker in the Dallas area must have been Knipstein then.
