yellow ochre
I am about to try and make some mokume and the book I have recommends coating the pressure plates with yellow ochre. Can anyone tell me what this is and where I would find some.

It's yellow iron oxide, or hydrated rust, plain and simple. Jantz sells it as a solder resist, which is basically what you're using it for in a mokume clamp. Most people I know just use a sheet of heavy brown paper between the end plate and the nonferrous stack, but I have read that about using yellow ochre too. Jewelry suppliers will have it as well, they use it as solder resist too.

You can also use "liquid paper" correction fluid, check to see if it contains titainium though. Not sure which book you are using and which technique, but James Binnion uses heat treating foil as a billet wrap in his process.

Steve, I have used the yellow ochre with good results in a carbon and wrapped in a Heattreat Foil pouch during a slowheat process works best.
The carbon you can get at any pet or aquarium shop, even wal-mart. If you need to talk to me give me a call on my cell (817) 676-2105. CurtisWilson P.S. I've been doing Mokume for about 14 years on and off. __________________ Curtis Wilson Wilson's Custom Knives, Engraving, and Scrimshaw |

I have seen where several also use "used heat treat foil" to put between the pressure plates.

A ceramic supply house may also carry it. I believe it is used in glazes, etc.
