Guys,

how much of run out is too much for 1/4" reamer?
I checked my reamers and found that almost all of them have some run out. Some more some less.
What is a "safe amount" (so it won't bellmouth a hole) of run-out for a long 1/4" reamer?

Thanks,
Alex

If you've center drilled, drilled with a reamer .005 to .010" smaller than 1/4" without moving anything, it's OK to run the reamer as long as it's the original length. That's why chucking reamers have long shanks. It will follow the hole. Most small reamer shanks aren't perfectly straight.

If it's clamped while center drilling, then drilling undersized, then leave it clamped while reaming.

If it wasn't clamped, that's not good, but the reamer will probably pull it to center.
