knifemaking...how about Nov 8th?

OK, how about a get together Nov 8th? Hopefully another hurricane won't come up. It seems everythime I schedule something, a hurricane pops up. I have some work stuff to schedule around then, but the 8th looks to be open.

I actually have the garage set up pretty decent now. I just need to get one of my heavy duty 1/2" steel tables with my vise and such down here!!!

...and all my little stuff like drill bits, files, rivets and all the little things you don't think about when moving big stuff!

You know me,I' easy. Sounds good to me. And have you poured about 2 yards of sand in the garage to store your tools yet.

I was having trouble getting this thing to let me reply yesterday.

I'll put it down on the calendar and see if I can afford the kitchen pass.

Has anyone heard from Chris D.?

Don,

One of these days you will schedule one of these weekends that isn't a Reserve Drill weekend!!!!!!!

Joking aside I will down that way at the end of the month of Nov for the last weekend of TRF so the budget won't pay for two trips down there.

Jim

I'll actually be in town, no swim meets, no cub scout events, no hurricanes, and most importantly Jen says "no problem".

The usual 11ish to whenever.

We won't even ask what you had to give up for approval!

She probably figures its the only way to make sure you stay in-country for a weekend.

Yeah, I just got back from the high NV desert. The worst field experience of my life. Three extra days, chemical burns around the ankles and almost rolling a rental 4x4 down a mountain....ok, that part was actually fun...and walking ~10-14 miles/day behind a baby carriage in the desert over cattle-guard like hard ground with a ph of 0.5.

No more travel the rest of the Fall, though!

20 lbs of radiation detectors and auto-logging GPS systems were my babies!

Of course...don't tell CPS, but my babies were shook until their heads popped off. But it's ok, I soldered their spinal cords back together and duct taped their heads back on!

Cool, looks to be a good turnout for a small hammer-in between this and a few other forums.

So far, topics:

1) Parkerizing 101...you get to learn from my mistakes!

2) Refractory testing for flux resistance. I have about six different materials to test out. When you do a lot of forge welding, you need a forge floor that resists the flux!

3) Tuning a venturi burner. This has got to be the number one thing I see most newbie forge builders get wrong. I've argued until I'm blue in the face on some forums when the advice always seems to be "open your gas jet size and increase gas pressure" regardless what the question. 5 minutes hands-on experience makes up for volumes of writing!

4)Judging temps in steel. Steel does lots of cool things when you heat it up. There's lots of fine detail to take note of when you pull a hot blade out of the forge other than a hunk of orange metal.

For those wanting to pound something, I have a variety of steels on hand. Fire them all up and see the difference on how they move under the hammer. Find out why you really don't want to try and forge D2!

We'll fire up the BBQ as usual. It's warmed back up now so the roadkill just isn't very fresh anymore so I'll have the standard hot dogs and hamburgers. Bring some chips, dips, sides or drinks.

How about a head count for KNET persons coming out?

Stanley's in,
Chris might make it,
You going to make it Rick?
Jim...gas is downright "cheap" now $1.91 here a couple blocks from my house. At that price, you're almost making money by driving down!
Lee, I sent you a PM a while back and never heard back. You going to make it?

Looks to be about another 4-7 persons coming out as well, so it should be adecent crowd for a small hammer-in.

I wish I could but I still have the military this weekend. About 6 years until 20.

One of these days things will work out and I'll get down there for one and I'll brings some eats.
