Opinions on Nikon D50 Camera

Okay I have decided that my little Kodak DX3900 (3.1MP) camera is dying on me. I've taken over 4000 pics with it so it doesn't owe me a thing. My exposures with the same lighting and settings on the camera come out all wacked out each time I use it now.

I have been looking around and am thinking of buying the Nikon D50 SLR digital camera to replace it. I have an F70 with a few lenses one being a D24-120 zoom which is a very nice lens. I can use this lens with the D50, would translate into a 36 - 180mm zoom lens for the digital camera which would be fine for knife pics.

From what I've read this camera seems pretty good but I am wondering if anyone has used one and what their opinions are? Even if you haven't used one but have an opinion of the setup I am proposing please let me know, I might be missing something important.

Thanks,
Sean

I am contemplating the same choice. Having read the reviews I still don't know if it is a good camera for taking knife pictures. I know it is far more camera than I need but does that make it unsuitable?
Thanks
Steve

In a nutshell the two biggest criteria for quality knife pictures from a camera are:

1. good focusing at a close distance.

2. wide range of Color Balance (White Balance) adjustments.

EVERYTHING else is dependent upon lighting and the user. Proper lighting is the foremost biggest need, before even a camera.

I can't imagine any DSLR not making the grade. Certainly not this one. There are many other things that should determine your preference, but these are mandatory.

It could take a magazine cover shot even with the provided lens. If you have enough budget it's PLENTY of camera.

When I was looking around for a new rig, I took a hard look at the D50. It is a very good camera and I saw some absolutely beautiful pictures taken with it, including closeups. I would think you could pick up a very nice used one as people upgrade to more megapixels and some of the new Nikon models.

Thanks guys. My thinking on this one is that it will completely replace my film camera and also be great for my knife pics. I just have to come up with the cash (and part with it). I actually need a camera sooner than later so I'll have to make the decision in the next couple of weeks.

I am using 5000K Flourescent bulbs (3 of them), my setup is very similar to the one you showed on the forums a while back Coop.

Thanks again.

Well I just bit the bullet and bought this sucker! Opted not to get the AC Power Adapter just yet, I'll wait and see how good the battery life is with it.

So now the waiting begins!!!

Thanks for the input everyone.

Excellent. Order another battery. One cookin', one creatin'. That's all I did. I don't have an adapter either.

Ya I was thinking that maybe just a second battery might do the trick. I'll look at picking one up when I am down in actual civilization in a couple of weeks.
