Mike it may not be practical in cable but I like 3/16 X 1 1/4 as long as you could make it. Are you thinking you'd anneal and surface grind it?

Roger:
Im thinking just the standard twist at the moment, nothing too elaborate. Im going to try adding nickle tonight, Ill keep you posted, what patterns are you looking for?

Dave, I think I can handle that, but the precision grinding will have to be contracted out. This will increase the cost, do you have the ability to have it done there? Know a buddy who owns or works in a machine shop??

Im open to any and all suggestions
Thanks for the intrest

MIke

If I had taken the trouble to let the word CABLE sink in I wouldn't have asked about patterns!

What sizes do you normally produce?

Roger

Don't laugh too hard Roger.
Patterns in cable are not as difficult as one might imagine.
Some options to consider:
We can add metals for color and contrast.
We can manipulate grains and patterns by several means.
We can weld together pieces like a jig saw puzzle if you want to.

There is an old thread somewhere in the archieves of the display case I posted entitled "WHITE TIGER". It is a display of mixing a nickel twist cable billet "inside" two opposite twist cable billets and forging them together in the shape of a blade. In this case, a dagger that sported a twisted wire handle.

Sorry Mike, not trying to take any business from you or interupt your post. If you are interested in discussing the possibilities of manipulating cable, please give me a call when you have some time, OK? Maybe I can help increase your future with this stuff.
I have been having a ball playing with this stuff.
The mind is our only limits.
I'll see if I can get my wife to post a couple of my new creations tomarrow in the display case to show you examples of what I'm babling about, so as to not take up the room here in your thread.
Have fun. Work safe. Be BLESSED!

Gene :
Thanks for the offer, Id love to discuss it with you! Im VERY interested in working with this, don't care if I sell any or not! Im having a ball!I got a piece tonight that came out with chevrons on both sides(Its nice when an idea does actualy work!)
thats the only pattern Ive gotten, other than just the spiral rope look.
What source of nickle are you using? will nickle silver work?
Or mabe nickle welding rod? If so, what % nickle must I use?

I don't want to compete for anyone elses bussiness Gene, please feel free to discuss this in the forum, like I said If I never sell any billets thats ok, Its such a hoot learning all this stuff, selling it is really a second!

Got to pick Bowies brain at the hammer in, talk about information overload! Man! But I think I caught the fever from him! Can't seem to get it out of my mind.

When I figure out hoe to do it, Ill post some pics. Ive got some chainsaw damascus that Max taught me how to do that is coming along nicely.

It's sad, Ive just turned another page, and its almost more fun than making blades!

Take Care, Happy Forging!

Mike

A twist right and a twist left welded together makes chevrons, or what I call a feather pattern.

Nickel welding rods give you silver stripes.
N/S will not do well in the welding.
The 99% pure nickel "cast" welding rods are what you need.
Electrodes can have the flux beaten off to use, or the TIG welding rods come 36" and bare. I use both.

Have you cut and etched your bars yet?

Do you roll or press?

Here is a good learning exercise for you:
Take the chevron billet and forge a blade with the seam weld running down the center of the blade and ending at the tip together.
Once you get that down symetrically(even on both sides), we will go to the next level, OK?
The possibilities are endless.
Be blessed.

Gene, actualy I had one bar that twisred one directin, one the other, then laid them togather so the pattern was correct and then forged them togather. Thanks for the nickle tips, I really want to try it.

And as for how Im doing it, Iis hand held hammer at this point, Id like to buy a press in the future, got to use one at Bowies Hammer In, it makes things sooooo much easier!

Jimmy Hyde had a roller press there, and I could see where this would be helpful, but I think I need a press first.

Do you remember where you had the white tiger pics? I love to see them

Thanks for all your imput Gene I appreciate it greatly.

Mike

This is all good stuff

I consider myself suitably corrected Gene, I'd forgotten about those pattern's you've done. I suppose when I think of cable I think of twist. I don't think I've seen a piece of cable Damascus I didn't like ....

Mike, To view the old thread called White Tiger, go to the display case, scroll to the bottom where it says search this forum, and type in White Tiger. It will bring you to the old threadIf you want to bring it forward, just post something after it, and it will automatically go to the top of the list again. It still comes around every once in a while.
You can also try, "NEW BOWIE" (same place) and get some ideas.
Hope it helps.
