File source for slot guard filing

Hi guys. I was wondering what types files you use for filing a slot guard, and where do you get them. Filing the slot in the guard is the most tedious part of making a knife for me. Since my blades are 1/8" max, I need files with less than 1/8" thickness. For the guard, I typically use stainless like 416 and 304. I could also use some input on my technique if you have any advice. After geting the rough cut with a series of holes or rptary tool, I scribe some parallel lines and sandwich the guard between a couple 1-2-3 blocks with bolts to ensure a straight line. Then I file for several hours until I get the right fit.

One method that works for me is to get a good quality finecut file and grind down one flat to reach the thickness desired that will pass through the slot once roughed out. You obviously cannot use as much downward pressure as you file. I have at least six files set for different task this way. Keep her clean and treat her nice. Make sure that is the only task for that file and it should last a very long time.
ps - I also use a rotary (flexshaft) with fine tapered diamond burrs to clean up the roughed out slot prior to final fit filing, if that helps. You can get really close with the diamond burr if you practice enough.

All the knife supply houses and tool suppliers carry files. Needle files are generally inexpensive and small enough though most of the metal will have to be ground away before you finish up with these little files.

Try Sheffield's, MSC, or McMaster-Carr or even Harbor Freight. HFneedle file sets are really cheap but I have two sets that I've used for years .....

Thanks. I was hoping someone knew of a magic file that would cut my working time in half, but I guess that's just wishful thinking . I noticed there is a huge price difference between different needle file sets. Do the more expensive sets do a better job cutting, or do they just last longer?

Both, I suspect. On the other hand, I just now finished filing two guards to fit two knives I'm building. The needle files I used are the cheapie set I bought from HF many years ago. Buying the best tools you can afford is never a bad idea but sometimes cheap tools aren't always a complete waste either ....

I drill two holes spaced a bit short of the final slot length and smaller than the blade thickness.

like this: 0--------0

Next, use a Dremel cutting disk from the back to connect the holes

0________0 on each edge. A larger file can then be used to finish.

I hope this helps.

I use 2 holes and a jewelers saw and cut out just in side my scribed lines then file the little bit left.
And buy the best tools you can afford !

Ben, Nichols files from Lowe's comes in a set of 4 or 5 files. Both of the flats are less than 1/8" and cut very well. The cost is very resonable as well around $20.00 for the set.
