Skaer, I have a partial log of snakewood coming next week and I might be willing to part with a little bit. Should be more than I could use in several years. Email me if you're interested.

You might try www.knifehandle.com. She lists both snake and zebra wood. It's a spin off from her regular www.thelumberlady.com site.

E-Bay. Search "exotic lumber". I buy from Cook-Woods. Great pictures of what you are buying.

For some unusual woods from Western Australia, browse my web site at www.aussiefantom.com. Several makers have purchased lace sheoak from me. Beefwood and myall also might be of interest to you. I don't have any blanks listed but am resawing large blocks so if you want a particular size or species, let me know at tom@aussiefantom.com

Thanks for the welcome

I have a lot of timber but you guys will have to educate me as to what you're looking for. I enjoy helping people get the piece of wood they like... and then seeing their projects.

I don't know about the other guys, but here's what I look for. I make overlays for my folders, so I need highly figured wood that still looks interesting when it is 1"x3" in size. In other words, tight, small patterns with as much color and figure as possible.

i usually buy boards, tom, then cut them up into blanks and slabs to cure and acclimate. i stabilize as required. like peter, i like as much figure as i can find, but the plainer stuff has it's place in low-end knife handles.
.
the big question i would have is whether or not it would be worth the shipping from australia for us small time customers? it seems that bulk purchasers would be able to arrange a better deal. i have purchased a few knives from aussie makers, but the shipping was included in the price.
.
thanx

First the good news

I'm located in the US so the timber is here in Maryland.

Yes the bad news is it's not cheap!! And based on shipping rates in the US, shipping from Australia may not be bad. I pay more to ship to the West Coast vs shipping to the East Coast... but it's one rate to either coast from Australia.

I was just resawing some blocks of lace sheoak today- take a look (500kb file to give you the detail- IE may shrink it but you can download it and look at it in a graphics viewer). This piece is 13.75 long by 4 inches wide and I think there's about 4 inches left on the thickness. Ignore the color variation- the darker area in the center isn't dry- the outer 1 inch or so has been drying. Also there are band saw marks- horizontal. And I coated the piece with Anchorseal after I resawed it (besides protecting it, it really brings out the color and figure).

I can cut to whatever thickness you want and bookmatch. Obviously I don't want to cut a 3 x 1 bookmatched pieces but if there's a somewhat standard size that I can bookmatch two slices and then cut them into the standard size, that would be doable. If you like the figure, let me know what you want and hopefully the sum of several people will work out. The wood itself is $40-44 per bf and for small pieces, a few bucks for cutting.

First Blanks- more to ocme

Dennis has offered to take some of my blanks to Atlanta so see him if you're at the show. I'm sending some that have been stabilized by WSSI.

Here's links to the first blanks- they're a little rough but you can see the great figure. The lace example is more a golden color (many of you have nearly cleaned me out of the darker red pieces). I'm still working on beefwood- you have to hit the radial just right. The myall is a favorite of mine- denser than desert ironwood. And finally jarrah- the super timber of WA- that's real curl- it's sanded to 2000!! It needs an oil finish as the grain is pretty open. We'll see how the stabilization worked on each of these this week when they get back.
