Steve,
Try Busy Bee Tools http://www.busybeetools.com/. I'm not sure if they have what you're looking for, but it's worth a shot. They have showrooms in Mississauga and London. By the way, your knives are just amazing. I especially love the bolsters on your ironwood drop hunter! You are one of the few guys that I look forward to seeing new entries from in the display case. I owe you one. You just saved me $100. I had ordered one of the metal cutting bandsaws from a local distributor but the cheapest I could find was $325. Busybee has them on sale for $245. Picked it up today, now i just need to figure out how to assemple it. Thanks Again Steve Busybee has them on sale for $245 __________________ Stephen Vanderkolff Please come on over and check out my website. http://www.vanderkolffknives.com/ Thanks |

Brett - sorry to jump in so late on this one!! My "real" job has been killing me.
Another place you might try is House of Tools if you have one in the area. In Calgary, we have two - one of them has a knife supply section. They have Dymondwood in 5x12 in sheets and smaller, micarta, brass rods/tubes/bars/nickel steel, cases, even electro etch machines and supplies. They also sell ATS34/440C and offer a heat treating service - if I remember, it was $8.00 to $10.00 cdn. per blade with about a 4 day turnaround. I haven't had a chance to try them out yet. I'm still working in carbon steels. Web page is- http://www.houseoftools.com/content/...nifemaking.htm They have online shopping - so despite not being in TO, this another Canadian source. We have a Calgary Metals Supermarket here, which specializes in smaller quantities - you may want to check to see if something like that is available there as well. I get my 01 there. Hope this helps - gord __________________ Gordon Kamitomo Calgary, Alberta Canada |

Brett - you are very welcome!! My time is starting to finally free up a bit, so I may be able to actually get into the shop, and post some pics that I promised Darrell about 5 months or so ago!! Maybe even post more. I have a couple of his TC-4's sitting on the shelf, plus 5 or 6 other ones dying to be worked on. I'll let you know if I bump into any other interesting sources
DimeNickel - I am also on that quest for 1084/1095 here in the northland. So far I've been unsucessful. Calgary Metal Supermarket could get me 1080 but it came precision ground like 01 and the pricing was out of this world!! It was something like $30.00 per lin. ft!! I'm getting 01 for about $12.00 per ft, which is about par to bringing it up from the US. I've been getting my 1095 and 1084 from either Jantz or TKS and kind of being careful how I use the stuff. Between exchange and shipping, it starts to get up there cost wise. I'm thinking that getting a larger forge than my one-brick forge and going after car springs, etc. is not such a dumb idea!! Hope this helps - gord __________________ Gordon Kamitomo Calgary, Alberta Canada |

quest for carbon steel?
thanks Gordon
1080 sure would be nice ....but I think the price is a little steep... -- actually... I can buy some of the steels through machine shops but their prices are wicked.... Ouch.. -- anyhow... I've been straightening out springs for years.... seems to be the only good source of cheap and stong steel. take care Greg |

You know - you are giving me some pretty good justification to get a bigger forge :-) Car springs are easy to get just about anywhere. I have in-laws who are farmers, so I can access other types of steels as well. Yard work and spring cleaning/work are really slowing me down this last month or so. Calgary has had this snow thing going, so it's been hard to get out to the shop. I'm planning start looking to the forge thing over the next few weeks. Because I'm buying flat stock, it makes it expensive to do much experimenting, but you have to experiment........
The quest continues - I'll post if I run into anything interesting. gord __________________ Gordon Kamitomo Calgary, Alberta Canada |
