Needed
I need enough stabilized burl to make 8 knives. Prefer dyed so that I get four colors, two of each.
Customer does not care what the burl is as long as it is "active." Does anyone have any laying around? Can anyone point me to a good source with reasonable prices? I knew I should have picked up a bunch at the Spirit of steel show. Anyone know who the people are that were in the back of the room with a lot of stabilized stuff and that big box of blocks everyone was digging through? I can't remember who that was but would like to give tham a call. |

stabilized wood
Hi Bob the guys mentioned above are the guys to see. Good selection ,prices and excellent customer service. They deal in and stock knife handle and scale material of all colors. The double dyed comes in real cool colors. They will also do your own wood if need be.

You might try these guys....I've gotten alot of wood from them. They are very accomadating and stabilize their own wood{although I've not gotten the stabilized before} Shipping is a tad slow but not bad. Hope this helps.

Note: Stabilized wood from recofor is not stabilized with the same acrylic that wssi uses. I've not used it to know how it works.

OK, I spent a couple hundred dollars at WSSI. Mike was helpful in suggesting colors and wood types. I took his word on everything and hopefully everything will be great. He said if I did not like a piece I could return it. In a bout a week we will see how good he did.

Hey Bob,
Remember this one? The wood was from Mike. It's the most beautiful piece of Box Elder Burl I've ever seen in my life. When I called Mike I told him that I was looking for something really special. He picked through his stock and sent me the block that this handle was made from. I think it was Don Cowles that convinced me to try WSSI, and I've been very satisfied. I've also been real happy with stuff I got from James (Pop) Poplin. I mainly buy Arizona Desert Ironwood from Pop. When I want some nice burls, I call Mike at WSSI. I imagine it does help if you tell him that you are looking for something especially attractive for some special projects. |

Terry,
Have you used any of Mike's double dyed box elder. I have tried both the black/gold & black/purple. The knives with them for handles didn't stay on my table long. Gary |

I got some black/gold and some black/green in the double dyed stuff. Looked good on the web page.
I just told him I needed 10 blocks and asked him "What do you like?" I just said I wanted "Active" wood and want a variety. When we were done, I had to ask him to send me an e-mail telling me what I just ordered because we went through so much. This wood with this dye, a different wood with a different dye. Another wood doubledyed. I just said Yea, give me one of those. At the end I could not remember three of the ten. I should get my list today or tomorrow so I can see what I ordered. You guys said they were good people so I just tossed the keys to Mike and let him drive. |

Bob,
I have used different woods that were dyed and would say that the box elder is tops followed by black ash burl. Something about them seems to show off the added color best. I have used several colors of maple burl and didn't like it as well as I do with clear stabilizing. Of the double dyed stuff I think the black/gold is the best selling for me. I'll be curious to get your opinion. After arrival of yours let us know what you think. Gary |

Gary,
Nope, I haven't used anything but the natural clear stuff from WSSI. I just prefer the natural look. |
