Cheap tongs, available everywhere!

I found a source for cheap, reasonably well made tongs, and they can be bought lots of places.

What I'm talking about are those 14" long needle nose pliers at Harbor Freight. The ones I got have bright orange rubber handle covers.

I got a set of two for $12.99 but you can get them cheaper on sale. One has a bent tip and the other is straight.

Sears has some similar ones, but they're probably a bit more $.

I've seen these things in various hardware stores, mostly the 10"-12" models but they make them 14" too.

I plan on doing a little modifications to make them better, the right angle one I'll turn into a cutler's tongs by bending the tip a little and welding a loop on the pivot pin.

The other one I'll tweak into a pair of bolt tongs for holding misc stuff.

$6.50 for a pair of tongs, not bad!

That's not a bad price at all. When you get them "tweaked" post a picture if you will. A lot of times a little creativity and just being observant of good deals (like the pliers) will net you a pretty good knifesmith's shop for a very reasonable cost. Good post Moldy Jim.

P.S. The "family" atlatl point is doing well, and keeps an honored place in my collection. It usually brings comments such as, "Gee, what can you tell me about this piece--it looks so old." Boy, do I have a story to tell them.

Cool Dana, I'm glad you like it.
It was almost as much fun writing the story behind it as it was making it.
