Anybody know anything about CN40??
I am making a knife using a chain saw bar off a big tree harvester. The Bar is 5/16 inch thick and solid steel. It is made by GB (Griffiths & Beerens) out of Australia. I called the company and asked what steel they made thier bars with and all the guy knew was it was called CN40 and had 4% titanium. Does anybody know anything about this steel? I need to know how to heat treat it and am wondering if it will make a decent knife. Thanks a bunch.

This steel should be great for large blades due the 4% titanium. Titanium is a very tough strong metal and should contribute some of its atributes to the steel. As for the heat treat I'm not for sure but I would probably go with temp a bit higher then most steel because titanium has a higher melting point.
